Letter from Cameron May 21st 2012
How are your new 15 investigators?
Um...they basically just kind of fell out they didn’t come to church but the ones that seemed the best we will keep working with the other ones we will drop.
Did any come to church this week?
We had 5 at church which was nice. One family and another woman she is the wife (more or less—they’re not married) of an excommunicated member.
Anyway sometimes that’s just how it goes.
How is piano teaching going?
Nobody really comes so if somebody comes I just give them an activity or when we all have electric pianos I will just let them practice and then I can practice too.
Did you get the books you needed?
No, but I found out a member has a book of simplified hymns so I will just borrow that and use it.
Are you still without electricity?
We still don’t have it. Pres wants us to change the house and move into another one. I told him that I don’t want to do that. I like that house and moving is so much trouble it’s because he is afraid we are going to burn something when we are using candles at night...kind of reminds me of grandma.
Is it getting warmer there?
More or less it hit about the maximum here. I think that’s what everybody says but it’s really not that hot its hotter where Spencer is. This is the cold part of Mexico and Pachuca was the coldest part of México. There is but honestly its nothing compared to what I have seen at the lodge. One time I went to the lodge with Dunker and it was pretty cold like around 15 below zero.
Now our apartment gets kind of hot but if you open the windows at night it cools down really nice and then in the morning you close them and the house heats up pretty good but we leave and come back at night and open the windows up again and it works out pretty good. It’s honestly not that bad.
This week was pretty good we are supposed to be looking for another house but I really don’t feel like doing it. The situation with the house without light we have already gotten used to. Honestly to move all the beds out and all the stuff pack my bags and move down the street just to have lights in the house....ugh I feel lazy just thinking about it. Honestly I don’t really care, because we have the fridge going and that keeps the food all nice...if you got food you got it all that what I think!
So when we’re out and about working we always keep an eye out for houses to move in to, but unless the house is really cheap and super sweet we probably won’t move.
Elder Garcia doesn’t really care about the house....or anything. He is really relaxed and just kind of easy going. A little messy but that’s about it. Honestly I don’t really mind messy I have had other things that companions did that bothered me more. It’s kind of interesting in the mtc its like you have to deal with your companion for the rest of your life, but I’m starting to get to the point where honestly I don’t really care because we just work hard and in 3 more weeks there will be transfers. I won’t be with him anymore and I won’t have to deal with his mess. So why worry about it’s just 3 weeks that’s kind of the attitude I have started to take on...."just wait it out.” My comp now is about the easiest to get along with that I have ever had and so we are doing good. I talk a lot and do most of the contacts which honestly I like to because it helps my Spanish, but one time I contacted this lady and I asked her a question and she said more or less. "Hold on white boy, is he Mexican?" She pointed to my companion and I said yes. And she asked "why doesn’t he talk? He knows Spanish doesn’t he?" and I responded “yes, he does.” And then he started talking it was super funny because she basically pointed out the point that I had picked up from our first day together.
We are doing good and we have one family that’s getting ready to get baptized this week. Their dad finally came to church this week and their mom is super religious and really white. She doesn’t look like a Mexican, she kind of reminds me of mom. That’s weird.
Anyway they are doing good, but when we talked about coffee she told us to let her finish this box of coffee because she didn’t want to waste it!!! That’s totally mom!! That’s hilarious!
Anyway I’m pretty sure that she already finished it this week it’s the week they have to do good or they can’t get baptized. So we will see. Anyway this week I played 3 songs in sacrament meeting. I’m getting better but I really wished I would have practiced more before the mission, but regret doesn’t help the situation. I played “Hope of Israel”, “There is a Green Hill Far Away” and “Oh My Father” but nobody knew that one here in México. It was pretty rough when people don’t sing loud and all your errors stick out. Whatever today we’re pretty bored we didn’t have any activity or anything so I told my companion we should go to the church and play the piano. After about an hour he got bored and told me that he was super bored and had never been so bored since the match. HA! That’s hilarious. So I asked him what he wanted to do and he told me I don’t know but let’s just get out of here.
This past Sunday was kind of funny. We had a family of investigators that came. In elders quorum (with the investigator there) the stake president comes in and he starts getting upset and yelling and asking why there are so many less actives in our ward and he is setting up appointments to get some sort of home teaching set up. He was like “Elder Hendricks! You are a missionary. Tell me 5 people who are not here who should be here.” So I knew the ward about as good or better than most and I spat out about 8 names of people who are inactive or new members who have stopped coming from the ward lists we had. I just did what I was told, but then I guess I did wrong because then the elders quorum president got mad and started talking about how he already has everything set up but nobody is doing their part. I have never ever seen anything quite like it in my whole life. It looked like a political debate or something, but all in front of an investigator. The best part was after it was all done the investigator told my companion "Don’t worry Elder Garcia after we get baptized we will keep coming!" HAHAHA, that’s hilarious!
Anyway that’s about all for now.
Elder Hendricks
