Cameron’s Letter April 9th 2012
This week we worked super hard...mom asked how many lessons we teach. I’ll just tell you the numbers we had this week. We taught 9 lessons with a member present. 5 without a member and 7 less active lessons.
President asked that we work 10 hours a week with less actives. We work more with them because there is almost always a spouse that’s not married and so we teach them. That’s more that 20 lessons, but I think it’s harder in the states. Honestly we could probably teach 40 lessons a week if we wanted to but what’s the point of teaching people who are not going to progress...or haven’t gone to church in 2 weeks. There is no point--you have to drop them and give time for them to humble themselves to want to join the church. Anyway we have more member lessons and less active lessons because of a letter Landon sent to me telling me to work with the members instead of working your tub off knocking doors and contacting. Instead we went to members houses some times less active too..and taught them a 10 minute little diddy and then asked them if they knew anybody we can teach. Then they would say yes about 50% of the time and then we would ask them if they can join us for the lesson. It worked out really good and we got a bunch of new investigators this week --so I guess I should say thanks Landon!
Ok the miracle!!! So yesterday a member told me that one of our investigators told the Bishop’s wife that she wants to get baptized! Ok here is the story-- Elder Sebastian contacted this lady like 3 days before I got to Tulancingo and then we together taught her the first lesson and committed her to baptism. We are supposed to ask a baptismal date the first appointment so we did that, but she like freaked out. She was really scared or something I think more of Elder Sebastian and told him that he was really forward and she told us that she was a Jehovah witness for a long time and didn’t want to get baptized. So about a week later we dropped her because she wasn’t progressing with us and wasn’t reading or praying and because of this she didn’t feel ready. But all in all we invited her to keep coming to church and she did. She came almost every week and really likes the church...so about a week ago she told us that she wanted us to come by the house and visit her. We did but it was the same old same old; her excuses that she’s not ready and all that. Then yesterday something else came out of the woodwork. She went by the bishop’s house and told his wife...I guess they’re friends or something that she has been reading and praying and she wants to be baptized!! How sweet is that! On Sunday I guess she went by the bishops’ wife’s house to ask if she was going to come to church with her!!! Imagine that an investigator asks you if you are going to come to church! It’s because the bishop’s wife is kind of inactive...well she comes every other week or something….but that’s hilarious!!! So we still need to talk to her and get everything worked out but as long as the gossip is true we are going to baptize this week! Plus Ana´s husband fell again --we gave him a blessing so that he would stop drinking coffee and he didn’t but he told me that it tastes different to him now. It tastes bad so I guess the blessing did help him as he told us this week that he would stop and he will get baptized the 22nd of April. We will hope he has all the lessons and as we won’t have time to teach more to people like him that want to progress slowly so we are just going to have to let it be. We’ll hope for the best on the 22nd of April.
This week I talked with the doctor again and he gave me another medicine...called Daxon or something I thought it was something kind of small but on Tuesday I started taking it in the morning. We then went to our meal appointment at like 3 and I met somebody that Grandma and Granddad Hendricks know-- an Elder Hopkins. He was on divisions with the zone leaders and so he was eating with us that day. He told me that one time one of his companions took Daxon because he had the same thing I had. He warned me to watch out and stay close to home, because that drug really cleans you out...and cleaned me out it did! which is good because I really needed it. Chicarrone and salsa Verde really isn’t that bad Dad.. It’s just because I was already sick. Have you ever felt like you were going to throw up and then had to eat something that you didn’t really like very much...that’s kind of how the experience went. Anyway all’s well that ends well and it ended well so I’m good to go, hopefully it doesn’t come back. Well thanks for all the letters and prayers we are learning a whole ton. We have interviews tomorrow so hopefully I will get all your letters and my package tomorrow. That’s what I’m betting on anyway. Thanks Elder Hendricks
Oh, dad asked what Easter is like in Mexico. To be honest with you I totally forgot it was Easter this week as it is called "Semana Santa."
"Sacred week" um...to be 100% honest I didn’t realize that here was a connection between the two...I just thought it was another religious holiday that they have in México Anyway it’s kind of crazy in some parts of México -- I hear they crucify people to remember the death of Christ and in others they carry crosses down the street with people dressed up like Jesus. Honestly it’s a huge mock of Jesus Christ...kind of sad at least I didn’t see any of this. This is just what I heard and some member took a picture of one and showed it to us... But anyway that’s that “Easter in Mexico!"
