Cameron’s letter
February 13 2012
I’m now in Tulancingo even farther from the city of México. In a place that is crazy far. Crime I doubt there is any it’s a city not like Pachuca but it’s still big. Our apartment is in a 5 story building and we are on top! So I can see almost all of the city from my desk every morning. It’s pretty cool to be honest.
My new comp is elder Sebastian he is really excited about the work and we have the same time in the mish but he has been in this area before. Anyway I was killer surprised at how hard the first change was I really missed my old area when I got here. All my old investigators and everything and just the fact that I knew the whole area in La Providencia. Dad said he was filled with pride when he got his second companion. I can say I was extremely humbled. I realized once again that I don’t know anything.
We started teaching together and practicing and he basically told me a needed a lot more practice. I felt really dumb. I realized in this moment that I really didn’t learn that much from Elder Lujan. Elder Lujan did a lot. Why because he wanted to. Just a quick thing on Elder Lujan—I’m pretty sure he has OCD like all the people in my district asked me if he had that. So basically the lesson was his exact way and that’s just how it was. On the good side everybody told me here that I have amazing Spanish for only 5 months in the field. That’s from studying and speaking all the time. They even told me I speak like someone from the north of Mexico. Lujan is from Torreon so I think I picked up his accent. Kind of funny. Anyway we had 2 baptisms this week but of course I didn’t really know them. But I baptized one of them after I did the prayer and all I started to lower her down in the water. She wasn’t plugging her nose in this moment I was thinking “didn’t someone explain this part to you? ...I guess not” so I just put her under. I figure people learn best through personal experience. That’s how I learned a lot of stuff. She came up choking and coughing I felt kind of bad. Oh well she forgotten all about it by now. She was quite interesting--really happy and smiley all the time and also really well, in America we would say blonde. But the truth is she is really excited about the gospel and wants to learn more and more. Oh ya I confirmed a lady on Sunday in church. It was honestly really bad. I don’t think anybody understood there was like a thousand errors but you get to a point in your language where you just don’t care anymore. It’s like your pride is so low that another thing on the list of embarrassing things that you have done doesn’t really matter. The list is long and distinguished. Ha-ha anyways I forgot my camera but I’ll send you some pics next week. I think I said that last week. I read Spencer’s letter. I got one thing to say Classic! Freaking hilarious it’s supper funny because you can totally relate. Tons of people forget stuff like that. His prayer was classic too that’s super cool that all my buddies are going to Spanish speaking missions. He said his companion zones out. That’s also classic its super hard to stay focused in the mtc all the time its 6 hours in the same classroom! Anyway this week we ran out of gas. That’s pretty normal happens in Mexico. But my comp didn’t know what tank was ours on the roof there are 6 apartments and 6 tanks so we were basically messed. So he said he thought it was tank 6 but I was a little doubtful so we did some thinking and guessed on tank 5 if it’s wrong we don’t get our money back. So I was pretty scared that’s like throwing 20 bucks away. But we were right. So there was no problem. Then I taught my companion how to light the boiler which I thought we kind of funny because he is a Mexican and he should know but I guess not. He told me in Veracruz they have thermal boilers that use the sun. And its super hot so you don’t need a boiler, so I guess I’m glad that Lujan taught me that. Oh another cool thing in Tulancingo there is free trash service! hahaha they have garbage trucks that roll around with giant loud speakers on top that play this silly tune its sounds like something that would play and that end of a superman film stinking hilarious. It’s like the garbage man is the hero of the town! And it says on the truck. Tulancingo te quiero limpio! haha I think its stinking hilarious. Oh so I got accustomed to the area and now its a lot better I was really surprised how hard the adjustment was I have never been home sick but I was like home sick for my other area! How funny is that. But Elder Sebastian wants to work I want to work out goal this week is 14 new investigators. That’s a lot but it’s possible and to baptize every week. We had one this week and one next Sunday so so far so good.
Anyway thanks for all the love and support talk to you next week.
Elder Hendricks
