This week was pretty good as we baptized for the first time here in San Felipe elder Vazquez and I are getting the train started back up because with Elder Cruz it wasn’t really working out that great.
This week’s highlights!
A fallen power line! We were walking down the street and I saw what looked to be fireworks about 2 blocks in front of us. Fireworks are super popular here and about every 5 year old has one or 2 in their hands to play with a night. That is what I thought was going on down the street, but then as we got closer I noticed it was a power line that had fallen down and was sparking! It was pretty sweet, but I guess it affected our house because we didn’t have any light!
The second sweet thing that happened was I found shoes! For 20 pesos in Tiangies! That’s like buying shoes for 2 dollars! They kind of fit…. but ill figure something out and get them to work!
The third thing is I gave a talk in church. I took Elder Holland’s talk from conference and applied it to the ward. The ward has a lot of problems with people wanting to be the bishop and stuff like that. They think it’s like a business or something. Anyway I basically told the story of the 10 laborers who went to work and they all got paid the same. I told them that God doesn’t require us to be bishops or stake presidents or relief society presidents to be saved. If we look closely at the Gospel of Jesus Christ these things don’t show up in the part about enduring to the end. We just do what Heavenly Father asks us to do, and we should be content with that! Anyway a sister told me after that I totally chastened the ward. I didn’t really mean it to be like that it’s just what I thought would help them.
Plaza de los Americas a giant mall in Mexico City where everything is crazily over priced….kind of like in the United States. It was pretty cool they have a bunch of stores you guys would know. Wal-Mart, Office Max, Sears, Chili’s, Burger King, Liverpool and Sam’s Club. It’s pretty sweet but super expensive, so we went and ate and took Mexibus and the metro!
Mexibus is super cool. They should do stuff like this in the US. It’s like a bus but it’s a metro! It looks like a metro and you have to get on at the stations and everything but it’s a bus. It drives on the roads…. well they’re roads but the roads just for the Mexibuses nobody else. Basically it’s a metro that drives on the road. It extends the metro lines to further parts of the city; it’s pretty sweet and goes fast.
This week was pretty sweet! Everything went pretty good. I have gotten pretty used to the area, and we have a baptisms lined up all the way until September 9. We helped this smoker quit smoking who had smoked for 20 years. Many of the missionaries before us had worked and worked trying to get him to stop and then for some reason he stopped smoking after I talked to him. His family are converts and haven’t had very much time in the church….like 1 year. A sister asked me how I convinced him to stop smoking and I told her I didn’t know. Honestly I don’t think I did convince him I think he just decided to stop playing around and get down to business. I just happened to be at the right place in the right time. Anyway he quit smoking last week and this week will be his clean week and on the 3rd of September he will get baptized. That’s a Monday because he wants the same missionary that baptized his wife to baptize him. So the service will be on Monday which will allow that that missionary to come from his area to baptize him.
That is about all that’s going on.
Thanks for everything
Elder Hendricks!
