Letter from Cameron March 12 2012

Ok Fam..Here it is. Sunday I gave my first talk in church! Pretty cool, but the bishop only told the zone leader and not us. The zone leaders are also in our ward, but they didn’t tell us until 1 hour before church and we were out passing by investigators. So I thought, “What should I speak on- it’s only 5 minutes so it can’t be too bad.” I wasn’t too prepared...but I figured that the Lord would help me because I didn’t really know about it beforehand. So I prayed and pulled out a tithing pamphlet out of my backpack and thought well this will be good enough. So I underlined a few lines that I liked from the pamphlet and decided to talk on that. When I go to church I was told that I need to basically talk on missionary work and nothing else. But I remembered one time Justin sent me a letter telling me how he felt more inclined to help the missionaries when they spoke on a gospel principle than a talk telling people to help them. So I decided to talk about the blessings of tithing and how I have seen lives change through paying tithing. I said a quick prayer and did what I felt was right. Anyway it was pretty sweet and went pretty well. I think the zone leaders lacked confidence in me to be able to do a good job...and they are exactly right if I did it solo, but I have the Lord helping me so there is nothing to worry. After the talk this lady was like “Wow you talk very strongly like my husband. Like UNDERSTAND!”....I told her I wasn’t trying to talk like that but whatever. Honestly during the talk I didn’t really feel like I was talking I was just saying stuff. It was like somebody else was putting words in my mouth. It was pretty cool. I don’t doubt it was the sprit. That has happened a couple times during our lessons and what not.
Oh ya the Santa Muertes are kind of creepy and really popular, the problem is there is no organized religion everybody is religious and has....well I would say they’re own religion. Like the church of Cameron Hendricks. That’s apostasy. So really who are we building-- The church of ourselves or the Church of Jesus Christ. For Mexico some people have their beliefs and there own ideas and for many the Santa Muerte is it. The problem is that in one part of our area in one colonial called La CaƱada it’s really bad like bad enough that members of the church adore these things and a whole bunch of other weird stuff. It’s amazing how far people can get off the straight and narrow path but still think that they are on it.
Well this week was good the one lady that came to church this week is probably going to get baptized this next week, so that’s cool. She’s read a ton of the Book of Mormon and has prayed and received an answer that it is true! How sweet is that? I was stoked. But the problem is we haven’t taught her the commandments. So we are worried if she drinks coffee or some tea or a beer she can’t get baptized. She wasn’t able to meet with us last week that much so we only had the first lesson and introduced the Book of Mormon. So we are kind of worried about that right now. At 6 tonight we are going to go teach her the commandments immediately.
My shoes--the ones we bought at Mr. Mac together mom. And I had them like
1 year before the mission. They are still in good shape they’re not going to break but it’s just that I have to get them repaired like once every month. But it’s really easy in the road there are shoe repairmen that walk down the street and yell “Zapatoes” So I just get it repaired for less than a dollar really cheap and that’s that. Elder Feildsted told me he is going to take his home and get them bronzed. I thought that was a little over the top but I guess he has a lot of money so whatever. Anyway they are fine right now and my other ones are like new because I only wear them Sundays.
Oh I talked to this guy about his trip to the United States it was the first time I had talked to somebody about working in the states illegally but like really talked. He told me his whole story and how we got over there and back. I guess he knew a friend in the states that helped him cross and get a job that’s classic Mexican stuff friends help friends and if you’re not their friend watch out. He worked in a factory in Indiana for 1 year then tuberculosis spread throughout the factory and the CDC found out or something then deported them all back to Mexico. So he got deported and said the whole thing was kind of funny and didn’t really care that much that he got caught because it doesn’t go on a record here in Mexico (and he got to go back with his family). It’s not like he’s a convict or anything. But anyway he said that the factory mailed his checks to his house in Mexico! That’s the funniest part that the factory actually paid out when he got deported. HA! I hear stories like this one all the time but this is the first one in depth and first hand. It was really interesting.
Welp the work is slow but that’s alright at least the people that come to church are progressing and getting baptized this is the last week of this transfer but I’ll probably stay here in Tulancigo who knows for Elder Sebastian I would like another cycle with him, he’s a good missionary.
We had a zone conference this week and we got a microwave! How cool! So we have a fridge and microwave and a plug in hot pad for pans and what not...that is living large. Elder Sebastian was pretty stoked for the microwave because now he can eat popcorn! That’s pretty popular here, but they eat popcorn with hot sauce. They put hot sauce on everything even ice cream. It is kind of weird but whatever.
Well thanks, y’all behave and have a good week.
